John Daly wears the perfect pants to be a wild Czechoslovakian playboy.
He’s spent a career being a wild and crazy guy and on Thursday, he shot a wild and crazy round of golf at the Czech Masters.
Yes, Daly’s over in the Czech Republic, sore hip, sore knee and all and he waddled his way around the Albatross Golf Club and played well enough to grab a share of the first round lead at the Czech Masters.
Daly opened with an eight-under par 64 and shared the top spot with Thomas Pieters of Belgium and England’s Callum Tarren. Daly’s day featured a clean scorecard — eight birdies, no bogeys on his way to his best round on the European Tour since 2009 in Hong Kong.
“It’s been one of those years where I’ve been hitting it really good, I’ve just been injured and having to pull out,” Daly said. “I don’t feel great but I got around today and I just played solid golf and it’s great. It feels good. It was just one of those days where the yardages into the greens were so perfect it made it a little easier. It was a very comfortable swinging round today and if I can do that every day, the injuries don’t tend to hurt as much.”
Daly’s physical problems started last April at the Masters when he had to dive to avoid a car crashing a barricade near his bus where he was selling John Daly gear.
Another American had a good start as well. Chase Koepka, younger brother of U.S. Open and PGA champ Brooks, shot a five-under par 67 on a day where the scoring was low and 109 players in the field were in red numbers.
Daly Fell back to earth in tougher conditions Friday. Early storms caused one weather delay, winds were up and Long John did the old 11-shot trick, shooting 75 on Friday to fall back to five under par. Good news is he’ll make the cut. The 36-hole cut was projected to come at three-under par.
