The bomber and the mad putter will anchor the U.S. team in the first round of matches tonight at the 2015 Presidents Cup.
In an “outside-the-box” pairing, Captain Jay Haas has put U.S. Open and Masters champ Jordan Spieth with U.S. Open runnerup Dustin Johnson as the anchor pairing in his first day lineup, making it a true “drive for show and putt for dough” team.
Spieth and Johnson will go against Danny Lee and Marc Leishman in a match that heavily favors the Johnson-Spieth pairing.
In the leadoff match, two bombers will pair for the U.S. — Bubba Watson and last-minute substitute J.B. Holmes. They will square off against Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.
The first matchups are “Foursomes” play, better know as alternate shot.
The other matches look like this:
Second match: Matt Kuchar/Patrick Reed vs. Louis Oosthuizen/Branden Grace.
Third match: Rickie Fowler/Jimmy Walker vs. Anirban Lahiri/Thongchai Jaidee.
Fourth match: Phil Mickelson/Zach Johnson vs. Jason Day/Steven Bowditch.
In two of his pairings, International Captain Nick Price has put countrymen together in the Oosthuizen-Grace pairing and the Day-Bowditch pairing.
Bill Haas and Chris Kirk are sitting out the morning session for the U.S., Charl Schwartzel and Sang Moon Bae are on the International bench. The decision to sit out Schwartzel was an easy one for Price as Schwartzel is suffering from flu-like symptoms and was still in bed on Wednesday.
For Haas, sitting his son from the early action, he admitted he got “emotional” over the decision.
