A pair of young PGA Tour stars knew how to make some noise Thursday at the Quicken Loans National championship.
It’s not everyday you see a first-round ace in a PGA Tour event, it’s even more rare to see two.
That’s what happened in the morning half of the draw.
Ryo Ishikawa started his day on the back nine and at the 14th hole of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, his fifth of the day, he started what would be a six-hole birdie run. He shot 31 on that nine then added his sixth birdie at the par four first hole.
If that wasn’t enough, three holes later he stepped up to the par three fourth and watched his tee shot sail about 12 feet past the pin, stopping momentarily, then the ball started drifting slowly back toward the hole. It moved like a fast snail until it finally fell in the cup for an ace.
It would help Ishikawa shoot 63 and share the first round lead with Retief Goosen.
Then it was Rickie Fowler’s turn.
At the 188-yard ninth, Fowler’s tee shot bounded off an embankment and headed toward the hole. It was a great line and for the second time in the first round, there was a hole-in-one.
That helped Fowler shoot a four-under par 67, four off the lead.
It was simply a day when aces were wild.
