The one guy who really fell on his face over the final five holes last Monday at St. Andrews was none other than Adam Scott.
You couldn’t help notice early in the round that the talented Aussie was shooting up the leader board on his outward nine at the Old Course.
Scott birdied five of his first nine holes then added another at the 10th to get to 15-under-par, a score that would prove to be the magic number late in the day.
Scott turned into the difficult holes and plodded carefully with pars at 11 through 13. He was in the thick of it with just five holes to play. But over those last five holes, he collapsed like the town drunk who had too many pints at the pub.
Scott played his final five in five-over and shot 40 coming hole. It was astonishing if not shocking. But this isn’t the first time for Scott. He has shared the lead on the back nine of the Open Championship in three of the past four years. So once again, it was failure to launch for Scott.
“Indigestable,” is how he described his finish. Good call, a span of hole sure to guarantee indigestion.
“I needed a good back nine and I had a really poor back nine,” he said.
Which leaves us wondering about his future in the majors. Things aren’t going to get any easier for Scott next year, he will have that security blanket known as the long putter ripped from his hands by the new rules.
What happens then is anyone’s guess.
