No experience, no problem.
That was the mantra for a half-dozen amateur golfers who showed up a lot of the professionals in the field Thursday during the opening round of the Open Championship at St. Andrews.
Jordan Niebrugge got off to an early start and fired a five-under par 67, a score good enough to tie the remarkable players with the same first name — Jordan Spieth. Niebrugge played at Oklahoma State.
Ireland’s Paul Dunne came home with a 69 as did Romaine Langasque of France.
Georgia Tech star Ollie Schniederjans had a solid outing with his own three-under par 69.
English star Paul Kinnear shot 70.
The player who was getting everyone’s attention late in the day was England’s Ashley Chesters, winner of the European Amateur Championship. Chesters was five-under par in the gusty afternoon winds but saw his chance to post a low score fade when he suffered a bogey, bogey, double-bogey finish.
