For your post-second round consumption, these Memorial musings:
You probably wouldn’t recognize Andy Sullivan if he sat next to you at the bar at your favorite watering hole.
Sullivan, a newcomer to the PGA Tour limelight, crashed the party Friday at Jack’s Place with the day’s low round, an eight-under par 64 that got him to 10-under par. He’ll play in the next-to-last group on Saturday with Ryan Moore.
Sullivan broke through on the European Tour earlier this year on the South African swing, winning the Joburg Open and the South African Open.
Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama kept himself squarely in the hunt with a 71 that got him to nine-under.
The two biggest names to miss the cut? Jason Day and Rickie Fowler. Day is a member at Memorial and missed a six-foot putt for par the the 18th hole yesterday to miss the weekend with an even-par total of 144. Fowler’s second straight 72 sent him packing.
Rookie Tony Finau is in at seven-under. He’s having a nice season. He’s already banked $1,142,795 for the season and is in position for another big payday with a good weekend performance.
Phil Mickelson makes no secret that he’s warming up for the U.S. Open in two weeks. He wants to see improvement each round and he got some on Friday. He finished with a nice 68 that got him to four-under par. His body is in Ohio but his mind is at Chambers Bay.
