In the strange world of women’s golf rankings, Lydia Ko just fell out of the No. 1 spot.
Ko had occupied the highest perch in the women’s world for 84 straight weeks, 102 total. That’s a lot of weeks, almost two year’s worth.
Ko has chosen to take some time off, do what a 20-year-old might do, take in some of the cool stuff around Orlando, where she lives.
Ariya Jutanugarn is now No. 1 and it wasn’t because of anything she did this past week. Jutanugarn wasn’t even in the field at the Shoprite Classic, where I.K. Kim beat out Anna Nordqvist by a couple of shots.
Perhaps Ariya owes So Yeon Ryu a thank-you note. Ryu, who could have grabbed the No. 1 spot with a win or runner-up, went out and shot 74-74, missed the 36-hole cut and set the stage for Ariya.
So there you have it, a new No. 1 who took the week off.
Go figure.
