It may be the coolest golf picture ever.
It is the image of the young Arnold Palmer and the much older Ben Hogan waiting to tee off on the second hole at the 1966 Masters.
Of course, they’re both smoking cigarettes.
That image would make the PGA Tour shudder today but back then, it just looked cool.
Palmer was a smoker for a long time, there are many pictures of him smoking on the course but he later gave it up.
This photo was taken during the third round that year. Jack Nicklaus would eventually win his third Green Jacket. Many thought Palmer would continue his “even years” winning streak. Palmer had won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964 — even number years. Palmer finished tied for fourth and Hogan was 13th that year.
By the way, this photo was on the office walls of many tobacco company executives during the 60s and 70s.
