Jordan Spieth has been all over the place at the Australian Open but he’s finally got himself in the final pairing with Matt Jones going into Sunday’s final round.
Spieth has made all sorts of un-Spieth-like mistakes for the first three days but as managed to overcome them with sheer determination and some occasional great shots. One of them was an eight-iron on the 17th hole as he wrapped up his third round.
Spieth jarred his approach from 177 yards for an eagle two then added a birdie at the par five 18th for a round of 67 that got him to seven-under par.
Jones has been the steadiest player in the field. He shot 68 for the second straight day and is in at 10-under par.
“Matt Jones has played the best golf through three rounds,” Spieth acknowledged. “Better golf than me.”
Spieth will have to summon some of the magic he found in the final round last year when he shot 63 to blow away the rest of the field.
It has been a tough three days for the entire field with windy conditions and very firm greens.
