It took three days but there’s finally a bonafide leader at the CareerBuilder Challenge.
Now that everyone has played each of the three courses, Austin Cook sits atop the 54-hole leaderboard. An eight-under par 64 at LaQuinta got him to 19-under par and he’ll carry a one-shot lead into Sunday’s finale on the difficult Stadium Course.
Like Cook, Martin Piller took advantage of birdie-friendly LaQuinta, shot 67 and he’s at 18-under along with 36-hole leader Andy Landry. Landry shot 70 at The Stadium.
Three back nine bogeys cost world’s No. 3 Jon Rahm a shot at the solo lead. Rahm still managed to finish with a 70 and will start the final 18 in pursuit of Cook, albeit just two shots back.
The field was cut to the low 70 and ties, it took eight-under par to stick around for Sunday.
Phil Mickelson played poorly, finished at four-under and is down the road. Ditto for Bubba Watson. He was even worse at three-under. Patrick Reed’s five-under effort wasn’t good enough either and he missed the cut.
