Andy Sullivan had a year like no other with three victories this season on the European Tour.
On Friday, he was all smiles as he rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt from off the green at the 18th-hole to tie the 36-hole scoring record at the DP World Tour Championship.
The Englishman shot 66 for the second straight day and posted 12-under par, a shot in front of PGA Tour rookie Emiliano Grillo. Grillo, who got his first victory at the Frys.com in October, had the day’s low round — and eight-under par 64 that put him in the clubhouse at 11-under.
Grillo has played well this season but did not win on the European circuit.
American Patrick Reed’s 65 got him to nine-under, the only player at that number.
In the all-important battle for the overall title in the Race To Dubai, Rory McIlory is just four back going into the weekend after shooting another round of 68. More importantly, he opened up a two-shot lead over his closest rival for the big title. Danny Willett’s 70 left him at six-under par.
McIlroy played with Grillo and saw the young Argentinian birdie three of the last four holes to better McIlroy by four shots.
Things could get really interesting on Saturday as winds are expected to pick up and blow 25, possibly 30-miles per hour.
