Bernhard Langer continues to mystify and amaze.
Even at age 58, he keeps proving that he is still the top dog of the Champions Tour.
He did it once again last week at the Regions Tradition. He not only won, he blew the field away. He shot 17-under par at Greystone Country Club in Birmingham, a whopping six shots ahead of runner-up Olin Browne.
This was his sixth Senior Major and his 27th victory on the Champions Tour.
Did we mention he’s 58?
How about the fact that Langer has been battling putting yips since the week he turned pro four decades ago?
That may be the most amazing part of his golf DNA. They banned the anchored putting stroke and he was the only guy brave or resourceful enough to keep his long putter and simply move it an inch away from his chest.
Voila!
So here’s one of the nuances of the senior tour — this week is the Senior PGA — and that makes it the only tour on the planet Earth with back-to-back major championships.
So who might you pick this week?
Defending champion Colin Montgomerie?
Perhaps.
But how can you not go with Langer?
The setting is in Benton Harbor, Michigan at the Country Club at Harbor Shores.
It doesn’t matter where they play, Langer can negotiate any track. Heck through 54 holes at The Masters, he was right there in total contention against the best younger players in the world. Ridiculous.
Langer still has the tools and most of all, the desire.
“We’re out there and the clock is ticking,” he says. “We’re trying to make the best of it. I love the game of golf. I love to compete. I’m very blessed with good health, a reasonable technique and a solid mind.”
