Just call them the “Minus One and Done Club.”
The 36-hole cut at the Players Championship came at two-under par and there were more big names missing the cut then there were in contention at the 36-hole mark of the 2016 event.
The two biggest names going home early were defending champion Rickie Fowler and world’s No. 2 Jordan Spieth.
Spieth needed one birdie over his final four holes Saturday morning but couldn’t come up with one. He blamed his putting and short game. Fair enough, he was back after a four-week layoff.
Fowler wasn’t much better. It was his shoes that garnered more attention that his game and once again, there will not be a player successfully defending the title at this event.
They had plenty of company on the “Big Name Flop” list.
Phil Mickelson missed his third cut in his last four outings. He was one-under.
Masters champion Danny Willett was minus-one and done.
Same for Patrick Reed.
They’ll all have the weekend off to think about it.
