Jack Nicklaus isn’t sure that there is a permanent “Big Three” in the world of golf but for now, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are fitting the bill.
The world’s 1-2-3 converge on Muirfield Village this week for the Nicklaus-hosted Memorial.
You wouldn’t know it from his record in this event but this is a home game for Day, a resident of Columbus and a member at Muirfield Village.
“Horrific,” is how Day describes his performance in eight appearances at The Memorial. He has missed the cut four times and his best effort is a tie for 27th in 2009. “And it’s my home course,” Day pointed out, “so that makes it even worse.”
Day believes it may be the fact that he plays a little too aggressive at tournament time. “I’m looking to change that this week,” said the winner of the Players Championship in his last appearance. Day feels that this week, he will “take more conservative lines off tees.”
Day, Spieth and McIlroy will all be using this week as their last big tuneup for the U.S. Open at Oakmont in two weeks.
Spieth won last week at Colonial and McIlroy comes in off a week of rest taken after his win in the Irish Open.
Spieth will play with McIlroy the first two days while Day will compete with defending champion David Lingmerth and struggling Jim Furyk, who is still coming back from wrist surgery.
