Rory McIlroy was flat out horrible.
Jason Day was tragic.
Jordan Spieth? Well, at least Spieth kept himself in the running at the 116th U.S. Open after the first round.
Oakmont took it’s toll on McIlroy and Day, however.
“It was hard to get in any sort of rhythm,” McIlroy said of his play on Thursday. “I just really struggled. Right now I just need to focus on hitting fairways and greens. Hardest thing for me is to stay positive and not get down on myself.”
That will a task in itself as McIlroy will have to play well in his second round to make the 36 hole cut.
Same for Day who played on Friday and headed back out right after struggling to shoot 76. He managed only one birdie on his day and was no where near looking like the No. 1 player in the world.
Spieth had Friday off and will have plenty of time to get himself back to even par.
“Overall I felt like I played well,” Spieth said of his first 18 holes. “I felt like I didn’t get quite get rewarded with my score for how I felt like I played. A couple of tough breaks. It’s a U.S. Open. I’m still in it.”
