Billy Hurley III is the only player on the PGA Tour who graduated from the United States Naval Academy, served his country in the U.S. Navy then won his playing privileges.
The coolest golf bag at the 2017 Players Championship belonged to Hurley.
His bag proudly displays a picture of the ship he served on — the U.S.S. Chung-Hoon, DDG-93, which designates it as an Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile Destroyer.
The graphics on the bag were designed by Hurley’s caddie — Clay Duerson.
The bag also carries the logo of the United States Naval Academy and the famous words:
Don’t Give Up The Ship!
Hurley had a pretty good week. He made the 36-hole cut, shot rounds of 71-72-76 and closed with 72 on Sunday.
He tied for 41st with Phil Mickelson and ironically, that’s where 54-hole co-leader J.B. Holmes finished after closing with a disastrous 84.
Sounds like J.B. gave up the ship.
