Brian Harman stuffed his approach shot to three feet at the final hole Saturday and stole the Travelers Championship 54-hole lead from Bubba Watson.
Both Harman and Watson played at the University of Georgia but it was Harman who came up with a 65 that got him to 14-under par at the TPC River Highlands, good for a one-shot lead over Watson and Canadian Graham DeLaet.
The three will play together on Sunday with the field teeing off earlier than normal and playing threesomes due to threatening weather in the Cromwell, CT., area.
Brandt Snedeker shot his season’s best round — a 63 that got him to 11-under with Paul Casey and Zach Johnson who shot 64s.
Harman, who picked up his first PGA Tour win at the 2014 John Deere, was looking forward to playing with Watson for the second straight day. “It’s good to be in the last group with him (Watson),” Harman said. “I’ll try to make some putts and see where it leads me.”
Watson managed only three birdies and admitted his shots were too far from the hole most of the day. “I played pretty solid, just couldn’t make any birdies. I didn’t hit it close enough. Hopefully I can make a few birdies early (Sunday) and have a chance on the back nine.”
Low round of the day belonged to Pat Rodgers, the former Stanford star. He shot a 63, his pro career low and he’s in at nine-under as he attempts to earn full exempt status on the tour.
