There’s a British Invasion after three rounds at the Honda Classic.
Three of the top four on the scoreboard are from the U.K., including 54-hole leader Tommy Fleetwood.
Fleetwood birdied four of his final six holes Saturday afternoon at PGA National and is a skimpy five-under par. Brendan Steele is a shot back at four-under followed by Brits Luke Donald and Lee Westwood at three-under.
Once again, PGA National battered the field. At the end of the day, only 13 players are under par thanks to a tough course, winds in the 15-20 mile-per-hour range and firm greens. Add water lurking on many of the holes and the going was tough.
U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland started the day three-under but turned in a 74.
Of the top four contenders, only Fleetwood was under par and his 67 was the second best round of the day to the 66 by Mackenzie Hughes. Hughes finished at one-under, tied for eighth.
“Two shots isn’t much of a lead here,” observed Westwood, who won a Rolex event earlier this season on the European Tour’s tournament in Abu Dhabi. “You have to avoid double-bogeys. They are the killers out here.”
Fleetwood got into the lead thanks to a hot putter. Tommy birdied 13 from 14 feet. He made a 45-footer at 15 then a 48-foot bomb at 17. He hit the final green in two and two-putted from 44 feet for birdie.
