Canada’s golf sweetheart had a pretty good time in Orlando Thursday and she wasn’t visiting any theme parks.
The LPGA season got underway and the women finally have their own winners-only event thanks to the Diamond resorts championship.
It’s a pro-am event so the winners from the past two seasons have to tolerate hacks like Larry The Cable Guy and others.
Didn’t bother Brooke Henderson one bit. The Canadian Female Athlete Of The Year for 2018, shot a six-under par 65 and grabbed a share of the first round lead with Eun-Hee Ji.
“I had to remind myself it wasn’t Wednesday afternoon, it was Thursday, and I had to get a good score together,” Henderson said. “I think that’s when things kicked in on the front nine. I started getting a couple of birdies to recover from that bogey, and then from there I was ready to go and made a lot of birdies. I’m just happy with how today went. Hopefully, I can just continue that tomorrow.”
She’s a shot in front of Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis. World’s No. 1 — Ariya Jutanugarn was in with 67 as was Lexi Thompson and Miram Lee.
It’s a small field, just 26 players.
Marty Dou Takes Home The Dough In The Bahamas:
Diminutive Marty Dou, a Chinese national, basically made enough cuts to have a cup of coffee on the PGA Tour last season.
He made just four.
But his comfort level on the Web.com Tour is obviously much higher.
Dou birdied the final three holes on Wednesday afternoon at Sandals Resort to walk away with a win in the first event of the 2019 Web.com season.
Dou pocketed $108,000 and got a leg-up on earning a second shot at the PGA Tour. His final round 70 got him to 18-under par and the title at the Bahamas Great Exhuma Classic. It was great for Dou as he beat Ben Kohles and Steve LeBrun by two shots.
