Brooke Henderson is Canada’s most famous golfer.
She made her country smile last year when she won the Canadian Open.
Brooke is trying to make it two-straight.
She got off to a nice start Thursday at the Magna Golf Club, site of this year’s Women’s Canadian Open. Henderson opened with a six-under par 66 and trails first round leader Annie Park by a shot.
Park, an American who is trying to get a spot on the USA’s Solheim Cup team, shot 65 to earn her first-ever opening day lead on the LPGA Tour.
As for Henderson, she was one of five players in at 66. Another of those five happens to be world’s No. 1 — Jin Young Ko.
A lot of Canadian eyeballs were on 12-year-old Michelle Liu. Liu got into the field by finishing as low Canadian at the recent Canadian Amateur championship. Her first day didn’t turn out to be what she had in mind. She finished with a nine-over par 81. “I would say, yeah, pretty disappointed about my score,” Liu said after her first taste of big-time women’s golf. Still, the eight-grader from Vancouver wasn’t dead-last in the field.
“I’m happy that so many people are supporting me,” she said as a sizeable crowd followed her. “I’m really glad I’m able to experience this sort of support. I’m definitely looking forward to hopefully playing a better round tomorrow.”
