The immediate future for Brooks Koepka is a giant question mark after his poor performance at the Wyndham Championship.
Koepka didn’t come close to making the 36-hole cut (three-under) after rounds of 72-70 left him two-over and on his way home. Of main concern is his physical health. Once again, he was seen getting stretched between holes at Sedgefield Country Club, much like last week at the PGA Championship.
“Not very good. It wasn’t good at all,” Koepka said of his play on Thursday and Friday. It was his seventh straight event and it appears to be taking a toll on his body. He will enter the FedEx playoffs around the 96th spot, which means unless he has a good performance at the Northern Trust this coming week, it could be a short playoff season for Koepka.
Like Koepka, Justin Rose missed the cut and stands around 110th in FedEx points, meaning he could exit after the first event.
Meanwhile, things were jammed up at the top in Greensboro. Tom Hoge, Si Woo Kim, Talor Gooch and Billy Horschel shared the 36-hole lead at 10-under par.
The field teed off early Saturday morning as heavy thunderstorms were forecast for the afternoon.
By early afternoon, Si Woo Kim put up an eight-under par 62 that got him to 18-under, good enough for the 54-hole lead.
Scores were low on Saturday.
Jim Herman’s 61 was the week’s best round and that got him to 14-under, four back of the lead. Rob Oppenheimer’s 62 took him into a tie for second with Doc Redman (63) at 16-under par. Billy Horschel (65) was in at 15-under par.
Jerry Kelly Leads Senior Players By One:
Firestone Country Club is proving to be a very, very tough test for the over-50 set.
Jerry Kelly leads the Senior Players Championship after 54 holes in Akron — he’s two-under after back-to-back rounds of even-par 70. He’s a shot in front of a trio of players — Woody Austin (67), Scott Parel (67) and Colin Montgomerie (68).
They are the only four players under par through three rounds. Miguel Angel Jimenez is alone if fifth at one-over par after a 69 on Saturday.
