Brooks Koepka can rip off a bunch of bench press reps with 220 pounds on the bar.
He’s said to be one of the strongest, most physically fit players on the PGA Tour.
Sadly, he’s found out that he can’t play three weeks in a row.
Koepka showed up at The Travelers last week, trying to convince everyone that he was approaching the event like a major.
That was as far from the truth as a player can get.
By Saturday, Koepka was mentally tapping out, declaring himself an exhausted young man.
“I’m done. I’m fried. My body is starting to ache, too. It’s a combo. It’s hard to focus. I’m just pretty — I don’t think I’m over the PGA,” Koepka declared.
“And then to exert all your energy there last week, just fried. I mean, I’ve caught myself yawning on the golf course. I don’t think I’ve ever yawned on a golf course before. It comes from the majors. It comes from being dead from playing so well. Mentally drained from playing in a major. It happens to everybody. If you’re in contention you’re going to be drained; if you’re not in contention it’s a lot easier.”
So there you have it from the fittest of the fit, a young player who has dominated in the majors but shows up disinterested in other events. After rounds of 71-66 at The Travelers, Koepka shot 72-71 — three over on the weekend. He managed to finish even par and a lowly tie for 57th.
This scheduling dilemma and surprise fatigue is something he’ll have to figure out.
He’s go the Open Championship coming up in three weeks then the FedEx Cup playoffs right after that.
Perhaps, perhaps Koepka should go home and sleep then wake up a week before the Open Championship.
