Bubba Watson didn’t have to worry about the dreadful weather Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
He was warm and dry at home or wherever he chose to hang out prior to this week’s BMW Championship at Crooked Stick.
Bubba was no where near Boston because he missed the 36-hole cut at the Deutsche Bank, a performance that pretty much serves as an indicator of the state of Watson’s game.
Now he can turn all of this around come Thursday at Crooked Stick. Yes, he can, Bubba’s done crazier things.
But based on his play this summer, you have to scratch your head and asked yourself:
Does Bubba Watson really deserve a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team?
Brandel Chamblee doesn’t think so and he’s got a valid point.
Let’s take a look at what Watson has done, or should we say, hasn’t done this summer.
Going back to June, he tied for 65th at The Memorial. Followed that up with a tie for 51st at the U.S. Open. Nabbed a tie for 14th at the WGC-Bridgestone, laid an egg with a T39 at the Open Championship and did even worse at the PGA where he tied for 60th. Blah!
A tie for 25th at the Travelers was nothing to brag about, he tied for 13th at Bethpage Black, the type of course where he should beat just about everybody with his length and shot-making.
Then came the missed cut this past week.
Fact is, Bubba’s game has been lackluster all summer.
Watson has but one win and that came early in the season. Since then, it’s been downhill.
The reason?
Watson ranks 172nd in driving accuracy and 139th in putting.
Is that a guy who deserves a Captain’s Pick for the Ryder Cup?
Actually, as we now know, it’s not a Captain’s Pick, it’s a team pick so does Bubba get on the team because the “Automatic Eight” like him?
There are probably more deserving candidates.
Ryan Moore is playing really, really good golf in these playoffs and he comes into them off of a victory at the John Deere.
David Duval believes “Jim Furyk is a lock.” That’s interesting but like Moore, Furyk has been playing his behind off as well. Anyone else out there shot 58 lately? Bubba? Rickie?
If this is a team decision then the fellas really need to consider who is playing really, really well coming into these playoffs and who is turning heads IN THE PLAYOFFS.
It shouldn’t be the simple matter of taking the guys who finished nine-through-twelve in the point standings for the Ryder Cup.
There’s a reason for waiting until after the BMW and holding the final pick open until the 26th.
Hopefully it won’t be a popularity contest.
They need to pick guys who are making putts and playing well.
And after two rounds of the playoffs and entire summer, Bubba Watson has done neither.

I completely agree. Watson has not played well enough to earn a spot. Since when been part of the Ryder Cup team is a deservingly matter?
I understand Captain Love doesn’t want to do his job and make the thought decisions, but come on, this is actually hurting the credibility of Captain Love and team USA.

You are correct on all counts, can’t believe this is what their year-long “Task Force” came up with…..
