This is the week for the Bubble Boys at the Wyndham Championships and that theme rang true again on Friday.
It was Ryan Armour’s turn to shoot 61 at the birdie-friendly Sedgefield Country Club and he’s the 36-hole leader in Greensboro.
Armour had little chance to make next week’s FedEx Cup playoffs until he found himself sitting at 13-under par, a shot in front of the only world-class player in the field — Henrik Stenson.
Stenson, ranked ninth in the world, added 66 to his opening 62 and is within a shot of Armour’s lead.
Armour is 187th in the FedEx rankings and basically needs a win to get into the playoffs.
That’s not the case for a couple of bigger names — Sam Saunders and Harold Varner III. Saunders, grandson of the late Arnold Palmer, is in at nine-under par and at 127th in the rankings, things are looking good for Sam if he keeps up the good work.
Same for Varner. He’s 138th and needs to finish in the top 15 to advance.
Matt Every, who took his turn shooting 61 on Thursday, cooled off considerably with a two-over par 72 and fell all the way back to seven-under.
The 36-hole cut came at three-under.
