On Thursday, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele set the tournament record for low best-ball score.
On Friday, they set a new 36-hole scoring mark at the Zurich Classic.
The Ryder Cup teammates, both California guys, added a 68 to their opening 59 and stand at 17-under at the halfway mark of the Zurich Classic, the PGA Tours only team event.
As good as they played over two rounds at TPC Louisiana, they were just a shot in front of the teams of rookies Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and the duo of Doc Redman and Sam Ryder. Both of those teams shot identical 61-67 rounds for the first two days.
Fridaiy’s round was foursomes (alternate shot) and the teams of Aussie Jasons — Day and Scrivener, got themselves in the hunt with a seven-under par 65 that tied them for the day’s low round with Garrick Higgo and partner Braden Grace. Higgo and Grace were in at 15-under while Day and Scrivener got to minus 14. Their rounds of 65 tied the low score for the alternate shot format.
Saturday is moving day and the format shifts back to four-ball (best ball) and once again low scores are expected. Last year’s winning total was 20-under but a number of teams should blow by that number on day three.
“It was definitely more difficult playing alternate shot,” Cantlay said. “I think four-under is really good considering the circumstances with the wind and our round yesterday. I think it sets a really good tone going into the weekend.”
