Sandbagging is golf’s most long-standing epidemic.
It’s everywhere, you’ve all seen it, even in your local charity events.
There was no better display of Elite Sandbagging than last week at the AT&T Pro-Am out there at wonderful Pebble Beach.
And this year’s King Of The Sandbaggers is none other than Carson Daly, a fixture every morning on NBC’s liberal-loving Today Show.
How do you become an Elite Sandbagger, you ask?
Over four days of the AT&T, Carson teamed with Ken Duke, a shade above the journeyman status, a tour winner but certainly a guy who doesn’t hit it very far and isn’t going to dazzle you with the number of birdies he’ll make at a venue like Pebble, Spyglass and Monterrey Peninsula.
Accordingly Duke shot rounds of 73-70-69-69. He shot six-under par and tied for 23rd. That’s certainly not what it takes to win the Pro-Am portion where the winning team has to shoot better than 30-under par.
The winning number for Daly and Duke was 33-under. Let’s repeat that — 33-under par. Daly cut Duke by 27 shots. Yes, 27.
For comparison, Jordan Spieth, who shot 19 under, teamed with country star Jake Owen to shoot 29-under. Owen helped him out by 10 shots, a shot better than two a day.
So there you have Daly, who carries a 7.8 handicap and once had a momentary dream that he might try and play on the PGA Tour, showing us his best Elite Sandbagging effort.
He didn’t turn pro as it turns out. Now he’s just your average multi-millionaire television star and the King Of The Sandbaggers for 2017.
Well done, Carson.
