The Top Five, the magical guys, the ones who control their own destiny at East Lake are getting way too much attention.
We are here today to celebrate the bottom dwellers. We’ve all been there, no one ever gives the bottom of the class enough credit.
The good news is that the LAST PLACE guy at East Lake will probably take home around $135,000. Last year it was $132,000 and the total prize money is up to $8.5 million, up from last year’s $8,250,000. That is a lot of Benjamins to spread around to 30 competitors.
The winner is two weeks will walk out with $1,530,000. Sweet. If it’s one of the top five, you can add the $10 million bonus to it.
But we digress, back to the Bottom Five.
Here they are:
Charl Schwartzel: He’s your Anchor Man, 30th, last guy in and was kind enough to knock Rickie Fowler out of the proceedings. Actually Rickie knocked himself out by not playing better. So congrats, Charl.
Johnny Vegas: Yeah, Hook ‘Em Horns. Vegas might be Comeback Player Of The Year. Went from losing his card to finishing in the Top 30. Great work for the man with the coolest last name on tour.
J.B. Holmes: He’s No. 28, but one of the 12 who will play on the Ryder Cup team. Most likely he’s the guy they put in their instead of Furyk. Holmes is younger, stronger and went undefeated the last time he played in the Ryder Cup. Look for him to have a good showing at East Lake. Glad to see him in the Top 30.
Jason Dufner: We seem to remember this guy from somewhere. Duf has been through a lot. Personal problems, divorce, wife taking a big chunk of money from him, yet the Duf carries on. His game is coming back but his putting will always hold him back. Congrats Duf, you’re No. 27.
Daniel Berger: His name was being bantered about as a possible Captain’s Pick for the Ryder Cup but there’s no way that Davis Love and his Boys Club was going to think outside the box. It was rigged, predetermined, welcome to golf’s answer to Pro Wrestling. Berger’s day will come, just not now. In the meantime, he rounds out the Bottom Five at No. 26.
There you have it, bottom of the class.
Still, it is very, very strong when you are one of the 30 final guys for this PGA Tour season finale.
Outstanding!
