Maybe you caught some of the action in Memphis last week and witnessed some of Rory McIlroy’s array of incredibly awful shots around the greens, a few chunks, botched bunker shots — you get the picture, it’s pretty much Rory’s mantra — hits it like Tarzan, short game like Jane.
So once again we’ve bringing you some short game tips, this time we’ve got the Callaway guys showing how to handle those shots off hardpan or if you play at a really, really manicured course, those nice tight lies around the greens that guys like Rory face all the time.
One thing to keep in mind is that the best short game players in the history of the game have been very creative and imaginative — Seve Ballesteros comes to mind immediately.
This lesson today shows how to vary your setup and how to get a little more proficient with your wedges around the greens, but also practice with other clubs depending on the length and lie — even seven, eight or nine-irons.
If you have the joy of playing in Scotland one day, you can even hit these shots from 50 yards out using something like a seven-iron.

Most of all — don’t forget — you need to practice!

Wow. It’s 2021.
“Hit like Tarzan, short game like Jane”?
Edrington should try to sound it out the other way around or
how about
“Hit like Korda, short game like Bryson?”

Thanks Joe, we were making reference to a very, very old golf adage: Hits it like Tarzan, putts like Jane; Truth be known, the top men’s putters run circles around the best of the women and that’s from covering women’s golf for a long time back in the day, also verified by a close friend who used to manage a very accomplished, very high profile player on the ladies tour……but the state of Rory’s short game would certainly be surpassed by Nelly and many of the current women….at least the top 10.

Omg can’t believe I almost didn’t bother with this article.
Joes comment came to my mind as well. That phrase in 2021 is bold to say the least.
And it couldn’t be more wrong.
I don’t care what any statistics show, i watch a crap load of golf everyday, and these days the women are overall superior at 100 yards and in; don’t get me started on top men regularly yanking wedge shots off the green.
I don’t know about long ago, but these days Lydia Ko and Inbee Park alone are regularly recognized as being on the shortest of lists of greatest putters (men or women).
IMO Overall the women’s game has better putting; tightier. Also convinced women are overall better at standard, basic short game shots.
The men are definitely still better at short game shots requiring high loft and speed. Women tend to take their medicine more; for that reason they do not develop those risky lofted shots.
Times and things are different in the women’s golf game; as they are for some old adages.

You mean you have women you want to put up against Collin Morikawa? You take No. 1-20 on each tour and it would be no contest…..
