This is the week that the PGA Tour basically kicks the Web.com Tour to the curb.
It is like it doesn’t exist.
But it does, they played the first round of the Web.com Tour Championship on Thursday and longshot Chris Paisley shot what may be the quietest 61 ever.
All the Englishman did was shoot 10-under par at Atlantic Country Club in his last-ditch effort to earn a PGA Tour card. He’s a longshot because he came into this fourth event of the Web.com finals (otherwise known as the PGA Tour Q-School) tied for 100th on the earnings list. If he keeps this up and can win on Sunday, he’d move up 97 spots to third and earn one of 25 cards that will be passed out at the end.
As good as he played on day one, he only had a two shot lead over two other Cinderella boys.
Ben Silverman, a Canadian, is currently tied for 85th. He shot 63 and could move up into the top 12 and gain playing privileges for next season.
Same for Cameron Tringale, a former Rickie Fowler roommate when Rickie was slumming it in his old Jupiter digs. Tringale joined Silverman with his own 63 and could move from a tie for 83rd to the 11th spot.
That’s the good news. Bad news is they still have three rounds to go and these guys aren’t back in this event because they had stellar seasons on tour.
No, like everyone else the field, they’re hopeful.
They can go about their business quietly because the PGA Tour obviously is focused in Atlanta.
