In Gee Chun says she’s bored when she’s not feeling nervous.
Bring on the pressure, she likes it.
She also responds to it.
Chun is now the record-holder for low 72-hole score in a women’s major. She closed out the Evian Championship Sunday with a 69 that when you consider she shot 63-66-65 for the first 54 holes, she went 21-under and broke the major scoring mark by two shots.
“I knew 19-under was the record, so there was pressure,” she reminded afterward.
Pressure? No problem. “I feel like dreaming now. I had a lot of pressure on the course but I enjoyed my game.”
That wasn’t the only record for her. She matched another accomplishment — she became only the second women’s player to make her first two wins major championships. The Godmother of South Korean golf, Se Ri Pak, was the first to do it. Chun is the second.
Chun’s victory also headed a one-two-three South Korean sweep in this final major of the year. So Yeon Ryu finished co-runnerup at 17-under along with budding superstar Sung Hyun Park. Olympic bronze medalist Shanshan Feng finished solo fourth at 15-under par.
After a tough first round, Ariya Jutanugarn rallied to shoot seven-under par and tie for ninth while No. 1 Lydia Ko never got it going. She finished two-over par and tied for 43rd, giving a step-up to Jutanugarn in the race for Player of the Year.
