It’s nothing short of walking on thin ice when you say what others should or shouldn’t do and major-less Colin Montgomerie, who went zero-for-75 in the four major championships, said last week that Tiger Woods should have called it a career at St. Andrews when he missed the cut at the 150th Open Championship.
Here’s what Monty said on a recent podcast:
“That was the time. Stand on that bridge, start waving, and everyone goes, ‘So, is that it?’ Yeah, it is. It would have been a glorious way to go. The stands were full, the world’s TV cameras—from all continents—were on him, he’s walking up there on his own, tears were in his eyes obviously You can’t beat that walk. I’ve done it myself. When the stands are full, you cannot beat that walk.”
Montgomerie also said he doesn’t see Woods winning any more tournaments.
“I can’t see that happening. I’d love it to happen because it’s great for the game. I would love him to win. But I just can’t see it happening.”
Given Tiger’s current physical state, he’s not capable of walking 18 holes, much less contending in anything.
At last Saturday’s seventh version of “The Match” — he looked exactly as most would expect — not very impressive.
Tiger still has a noticeable limp and now has a setback thanks to plantar fasciitis.
Tiger is teeing it up this weekend at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando with son Charlie at the PNC Championship.
As for Monty, well, just put him down as a late bloomer. The 59-year-old Scot won three senior majors — the 2014 and 2015 Senior PGA and the 2014 USGA Senior U.S. Open.
