We will remember 2020 as a year unlike any other, for the world, for sports, for everything.
Despite world-wide hardships, Collin Morikawa will have the memory of his victory at the PGA Championship. And he gave us the perfect moment that perhaps summed up the year when he hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy and the lid promptly came tumbling off.
Traditionally, golfers hoist the trophy after winning a major.
For The Masters, the Green Jacket ceremony trumps that and the trophy itself, a replica of the Augusta National clubhouse, has no moving pieces.
The Claret Jug is just that — a jug. No moveable parts.
The U.S. Open trophy is a lot smaller than the Wanamaker, easy to handle and the lid is pretty tight on the top.
But the Wanamaker? It’s a huge trophy, not so easy to hoist in the air and watch out for the lid!
Morikawa, probably like many, didn’t know it had a lid. Sure enough, as he hoisted it up, off came the lid.
His reaction was priceless.
Our 2020 image of the year — easily.
PGA Tour Won’t Require COVID Vaccine For Players:
With the rollout of the COVID vaccine beginning around the country, PGA Tour Commish Jay Monahan (aka The Sheriff Of Nottingham) says the Tour won’t require players to get the immunization when it is available to them.
“I think vaccination is a choice, and I would apply the same logic and the same amount of care to that subject as we have to every other subject, and that is to try and do our best to educate our members on vaccination and the pros and cons associated with it,” Monahan said. “But ultimately it’s an individual decision.”
The Tour starts back up next week at the Tournament of Champions and the question about spectators continues to be a fluid decision at 2021 events.
“It really is hard to predict at this point what that will be. We’re very encouraged by the news around the vaccine and vaccine distribution and paying very close attention to what that can mean as we go into calendar year 2021,” Monahan said. “I think you’ll just see a slow and steady increase in the number of fans that we have on-site, but again, we won’t be the sole arbiter in that. Any steps that we take we’ll be doing in concert with our partners in the local communities where we play.”
