Austin Cook, aka, “Cookie The Rookie” is in unchartered territory at the RSM Classic.
The Web.com grad from the 2017 class shot a career round 62 Friday on the Seaside course and finds himself leading at the halfway mark. He’s 14-under par, a shot in front of veteran Brian Gay.
Gay shot 64 on the Seaside track and is in the house at 13-under par.
Those two players have basically separated themselves from the field. Cook is five in front, Gay four ahead of a group at nine-under that included first-round leader Chris Kirk. He cooled off after his opening 63 at the Plantation course and recorded an even par round of 70 at Seaside.
Last week’s champion Patton Kizzire is seven back, in at seven-under along with Bubba Watson, who credited better putting for his six-under 64 at Seaside.
Scores were low and it took three-under to stick around for the weekend.
Notables missing the cut included Ernie Els (one-over) and host Davis Love III (three-over). Strangest swing of the day was Nick Watney. He shot 65 to open on Thursday but soared to 77 and is on his way home. Defending champion Mac Hughes won’t be around for the weekend either. He finished 36-holes at even par.
