The four most important weeks of the 2016 golf season are here and the WGC Firestone is a huge cog in what could be a magnificent run by the golfer who finds his form now.
It was a year ago at Firestone where Shane Lowry put the world on notice that he was the type of player who could contend in a major event. Two weeks ago at Oakmont, that was even more apparent. Lowry this week joined world’s No. 1 Jason Day as the latest players to withdraw their names from Olympic team consideration.
This week could set the table for a player to make an improbable run in the final two majors thanks to schedule compression brought on by the Olympic Games.
In two weeks, the Open Championship will be held at Royal Troon then two weeks afterward, the PGA begins at Baltusrol.
After Sunday, players will have two choices: they can head to Inverness to play in next week’s Scottish Open, or, wait a few days and head for Royal Troon and get a headstart on Open Championship prep work.
There is no PGA Tour event next week due to the ravaging floods in West Virginia that made the Greenbrier Resort unplayable.
You will see most of the big names at Firestone: Day, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson and of course, defending champion Lowry.
We’ll get an idea of who is rounding into form and who might have a chance to win not one, but two majors over the next four weeks.
This major championship season has been packed with suspense and surprises.
So what will the next four weeks bring?
Stay tuned.
