D.A. Points’ career has been on a steep downhill slide the past two seasons.
He had not won since the 2013 Houston Open, yet there he was tied with the lead with three holes to play Sunday at the Puerto Rico Open.
Points wasn’t sure he had it in him but he found the memories of his two PGA Tour wins and birdied two of those final three holes to get to 20-under par and revive his sagging career.
“I can’t even begin to explain,” said an emotional Points after he finished with a final round 66 at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club. “I’ve had a couple of horrible years and put my family through a lot. I didn’t know if I had it in me but I was just playing golf.”
Points will now be able to head to Houston this week with his game on the rise and memories from his win there four years ago. “The way I’m putting and swinging, there’s no reason I can’t be in the hunt again,” he said.
Finishing tied for second behind points were former U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, Bill Lunde and Bryson DeChambeau. Goosen carded a final round 64, DeChambeau got his game back on track and closed with a 67 while Lunde shot 68.
Points’ win did not earn him a trip to the Masters but it did get him into the Players Championship and the PGA in August.
