Jason Day told everyone a while back that he wants to stay No. 1 in the world, that he wanted to widen the gap between him and the other top players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Hasn’t happened.
In fact, under the right circumstances, we could have a new No. 1 next week.
First thing that has to happen is Dustin Johnson winning the PGA Championship this week. That would give him a Jordan Spieth-like season with a pair of majors in 2016.
Second, Day has to finish worse than tied for second. And finishing that high may be a tough task for Day, who is showing signs of fatigue after defense of his Canadian Open title last week at Glen Abbey.
Day didn’t show up at Baltusrol on either Monday or Tuesday, an unprecedented turn of events at a major.
Day also understands that D.J. could take his spot.
“It is added motivation for sure,” Day admitted. “Obviously I want to keep the world No. 1 spot but I can’t focus on it too much.”
Where Day’s focus lies, is getting enough rest to compete this week as defending champion.
Good luck with that.
