Denmark Domination was the description of the day two events at the World Cup.
Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen were head and shoulders above the rest of the field in Friday’s best-ball format. They put together a brilliant team effort that saw them turn in a 12-under par 60 that gave them a three-shot lead at the halfway mark down-under in Australia.
The Danish duo got off to a fast start with a pair of eagles and birdies on the front nine of the Kingston Heath Golf Club that sent them out in 29. They carried the momentum to the back nine with five straight birdies starting at the 10th hole.
“It was great, I feel like we both were playing well, actually,” said Olesen, who shot 65 on his own ball while Kjelsen would have had a 68 on his ball. “We did very well today.”
They were three ahead of the surprise team of the event thus far, the Chinese team of Ashun Wu and partner Haotong Li. They shot 65 in the best-ball and found themselves nine-under, a shot ahead of first round leaders Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain. The Spanish team followed up their opening 69 in alternate shot with a best-ball 67.
Americans Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker’s 67 got them to seven-under and tied for fourth with three other teams.
The home-country favorites — Adam Scott and Marc Leishman — shot 68 and got themselves to two-under and tied for 18th.
