By his own admission, Jason Day didn’t have his best stuff on Saturday at the BMW Championship but that didn’t stop him from increasing his lead to six shots through 54 holes.
He jarred a 20-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole to shoot 69 and he’s 20-under through three rounds and will take the biggest three-day lead of the season into Sunday’s finale.
Day will start with a half-dozen shot margin over Scott Piercy and Daniel Berger, who are tied at 14-under. Rory McIlroy got himself to 13-under with a 67.
“It was way different today,” Day said of the conditions as the winds came in from the north at 15-miles per hour and took away the easy scoring that the field saw the first two rounds. “It was a northerly wind, a tougher wind and the pin locations were tougher,” Day added.
Day also admitted he made more mistakes than he did the first two days when he was nearly perfect. “I wasn’t quite as committed to my swing as I normally would be. I made some mental errors out there today like hitting it out-of-bounds on 13.” Day still managed to shoot in the 60s again. He led by as many as eight shots but four bogeys kept him from totally shutting out the rest of the field.
Rickie Fowler had the day’s low round, a 66 that put him in a group at 12-under with Dustin Johnson and Kevin Na. Fowler, who played with Day the first two rounds, wasn’t even thinking about catching the leader. “”It’s just fun to watch when guys are on like that,” Fowler said.
Day was not over-concerned about Sunday.
“Hopefully, I can pull it off,” he said.
