Jason Day’s season is over.
After coming in to this week’s Tour Championship “cautiously optimistic” about his fragile back, he was apparently too optimistic.
At the eighth hole Friday, Day pulled his tee shot into the water, took a drop, took another swipe with his driver then withdrew from the tournament.
He cited the same problem that forced him out of the BMW Championship two weeks ago.
Day, the world’s No. 1 player, didn’t linger to discuss the situation.
He was fourth in the standings with a chance to win the FedEx Cup and Player of the Year, but now he won’t win either.
Day opened with a 67 on Thursday and was in the thick of it. He was even-par on the round through the seven holes he completed.
