Bryson DeChambeau’s calculations were spot on Saturday at the Northern Trust and the result was a career low round that basically lapped the field at the Northern Trust.
DeChambeau holed a 15-footer for birdie at the 18th for an eight-under par 63 and a 16-under par 54-hole total.
He’s four clear of Keegan Bradley and he’s that close thanks to the nine-under 62 he shot, still, at 12-under he’s four behind.
Tony Finau (66) and Cam Smith (65) will start the final round five back.
So what happened to the overnight leaders?
Brooks Koepka’s putter went cold on him and the ensuing 72 he shot left him seven back of DeChambeau. The other co-leader, Jamie Lovemark, got off to a slow start and his 73 dropped him all the way back to eight-under.
Jordan Spieth turned in his best round since that Sunday at The Masters. Still, his 64 only got him to nine-under, seven back of DeChambeau.
“That was impressive,” DeChambeau said of Bradley’s 62. “I saw that and knew if I wanted to be up the leaderboard I’d have to go low.” And that’s exactly what he did.
“All in all, it’s been a great year, overall,” DeChambeau said after his round.
He finished just outside the automatic qualifiers for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, in the ninth position. When asked about it, he simply replied:
“Man on a mission. That’s all I’m gonna say.”
