They were playing another Tour Championship in quiet anonymity at the Atlanta Beach Country Club Sunday.
With Tiger Woods the talk of the entire golf world and Justin Rose a distant afterthought, only Denny McCarthy’s family and friends knew he won the “other” Tour Championship — as in the Web.com Tour Championship.
McCarthy, a two-time All-America at the University of Virginia, fashioned a final round 65 to shoot a dazzling 23-under par for the victory.
He entered the last event of the Web.com Tour finals in the 10 spot and finished No. 1, winning his tour card in the process. He won four shot over former U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover, who came into the final event well out of the top 25 and he needed to be inside that number to regain his tour card. He finished solo second at 19-under with a closing 69 and jumped from 33rd to seventh.
Chase Wright was one of five players tied at 18-under but he already had his tour card thanks to a top 25 finish in the year-end Web.com money list. Aussie Cam Davis had clinched his card, he was seventh in the finals money and a closing 66 jumped him to fifth.
Three longshots came through in the final event.
Ben Silverman shot 68, jointed the group at 18-under and jumped from 63rd to 22nd.
Cameron Tringale (69) jumped from 62nd to 21st. Austrian-born Sepp Straka held the 54-hole lead but his 71 dropped him back to 18-under. Still that was good enough to take him from a tied for 80th to No. 20.
