The USGA may not know how to make rulings during the U.S. Open but they know how to create some pretty interesting groups.
The women head to CordeValle Golf Club in Gilroy, Ca. for the Women’s U.S. Open Championship and the first two days will feature the newest rivalry in golf — Lydia Ko vs. Brooke Henderson.
That’s No. 1 in the world rankings Lydia Ko vs. No. 2 Brooke Henderson.
The last time we saw these two it was the 19-year-old Ko in the sudden-death playoff with the 18-year-old Henderson at Sahalee for the PGA title. Henderson won and instantly put the rest of the women’s world on notice.
Including Ko.
They will play together the first two days and the USGA was kind enough to throw in America’s best player — Lexi Thompson, just to keep us interested.
But it is Ko and Henderson who are the two hottest players in the women’s world. Henderson may be the most confident coming into this oldest of the women’s majors.
With the pre-tournament spotlight on Ko and Henderson, defending champion In Gee Chun isn’t even in the conversation.
Neither is anyone else for that matter.
The world firmly believes that one of the two will win.
Ko has the best overall game for U.S. Open style golf. She keeps it in play, makes few, if any, mistakes.
Henderson is long off the tee, plays a power game and wears her emotions on her sleeve.
Ko is steady and stoic.
It makes for a great matchup and with Ko, Henderson and Thompson playing together for the first two days, at least the USGA managed to get something right for a change.
