Dustin Johnson was the biggest casualty of the 36-hole cut Friday at the 85th Masters as it took a score of three-over par (147) or better to stick around for the weekend.
The world’s No. 1 never looked good during the first two days on his way to rounds of 74-75. He shot himself in the foot on the back nine Friday, looking sloppy over the final nine holes, including the seven-iron second he saw back off the 15th green and into the water fronting the slippery putting surface. His putter was no friend either.
But D.J. can’t go home. He’ll be there on Sunday afternoon to slip the Green Jacket on the new champion for 2021.
Here are some of the other big names who didn’t make it:
Brooks Koepka (74-75): Boasting Brooks showed up on Sunday, surprising everyone as he’s only a month post-op for surgery on his right knee. “I wouldn’t show up if I thought I was going to finish second,” Koepka boasted. We wonder if he would have shown up if we told him he’d miss the cut?
Sergio Garcia (76-72): The 2017 champion fell a shot short after shooting even par on Friday.
Danny Willett (76-73): Everyone still wonders how this guy won a Green Jacket.
Rory McIlroy (76-74): Is is any surprise Rory missed the cut? His game is in a total state of flux right now and it showed.
Patrick Cantlay (79-73): A lot of people thought he’d be one of the guys to beat. Not a good showing at all as he finished eight-over par.
Also, there will be no low amateur in the Butler Cabin on Sunday. All three, including U.S. Amateur champ Tyler Strafaci (80-81), missed the cut.
