By late Sunday, Dustin Johnson should be collecting his 22nd PGA Tour victory.
D.J. followed up his Friday 60 with a 64 on Saturday and took total control of the Northern Trust.
Johnson made it look easy at TPC Boston. Harris English threatened him, briefly, on the back nine, tying the lead at 19-under. But English fell apart with bogeys at 16 and 17 then failed to birdie the par four 18th. On the other side of the run, D.J. birdied 17 from 20 feet then holed a 40-footer for eagle three to finish his day at 22-under, five better than Harris and Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler, one of eight rookies to make the playofffs, finished with 67 and was tied at 17-under with English.
“I’m in a great position and like where I’m at, but I’m still going to have to go out and shoot a good score,” Johnson said. “You can go low out here and guys are going low every day, especially with the conditions we have — perfect greens, golf course is in great shape and not a lot of wind.”
There was a 50-minute weather delay around 3:30 but it didn’t affect Johnson in the least.
It was an impressive follow-up to D.J.’s Friday performance, where he missed an opportunity to shoot 59 or better.
Should Johnson go on to win on Sunday, he’ll move to No. 1 in the FedEx points standing and he’ll take over from Jon Rahm as the No. 1 player in the world rankings.
