The field has shrunk from 125 to 100 and come Monday, only the top 70 will move on in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
No worries at the top with guys like Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson but there are a bunch of guys who need to perform at the TPC Boston when the Deutsche Bank Championship begins on Friday morning.
Here’s a look at some of the nervous Nellies:
No. 70 – Boo Weekley: Boo’s been a winner on the PGA Tour but he’s packed on some pounds, fitness doesn’t appear to be in his vocabulary and he’s sitting there on the bubble. Can’t afford to miss the cut on Saturday.
No. 71 – Keegan Bradley: Here’s a guy who has really vanished from the upper echelon of the tour. He proposed to girlfriend Jillian Stacey last weekend but now needs a really good performance in his hometown.
No. 72 – Morgan Hoffman: Has regressed from last season a bit. Only two top 10s this season. Earnings just north of $1 million. Needs to make some birdies this week.
No. 73 – Alex Cejka: Poster guy for journeymen golfers. He’s been around a long time, bouncing around between PGA Tour and Web.com. This year he’s managed just one top 10.
No. 74 – Charles Howell III: Tons of talent but has really struggled this season. Six top 10s last year, only three this season.
No. 75 – Matt Every: His season came down to basically one week when he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Other than that, he’s done almost nothing. But that one win assures two years of playing privileges. That takes the pressure off.
BIG NAMES IN DANGER:
No. 82 – Jason Dufner: The Duf has been through a lot this season. Stuff like a divorce can take an emotional toll on players and Duf got battered by his ex. He can make himself feel a lot better with a good showing at TPC Boston.
No. 87 – Luke Donald: Former world’s No. 1, too much talent to be wallowing in the mire like he is.
No. 91 – Hunter Mahan: He has played in EVERY FedEx Cup playoff event but unless he steps up with a great finish this week, that streak will come to a sad end.
