Business for sale:
Be the first in your neighborhood to own your own golf tour. You can be the boss/owner/president/vice-president/treasurer of the World Long Drive Association.
Yes, golf fans, that barnstorming group of golf ball crushers — The World Long Drive Association — is now up for grabs.
It’s currently owned by The Golf Channel and apparently during this COVID-19 business, The Golf Channel has done some soul searching.
First, it made the decision in March to leave sunny Orlando, Florida for the harsh winters of Stamford, Connecticut, home of the NBC Sports Group’s headquarters. That move will happen sometime in the next 10-11 months. Yeah, Arnie’s dead (Golf Channel founder Arnold Palmer), no need to stay in Orlando.
This week another big move is in the offing — The World Long Drive Association is officially for sale. jSeems that smashers tour is suffering from dwindling sponsorship money along with travel and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Note that long-hitters from other parts of the world are integral participants in the long-drive competitions.
The Golf Channel threw out that old corporate line: “Looking to focus on its core business of media.”
The 2020 WLDA season was supposed to start in April but never got going. Five events were called off, leaving only the year-end World Long Drive competition that was supposed to be staged in September.
The Golf Channel has owned the World Long Drive Association since 2015. Thought process back then was to expand Golf Channel programming beyond its PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and LPGA coverage.
How much?
How about the term “negotiable.”
What you do have in this case is a motivated seller, which is always an advantage for the buyer.
Official World Golf Rankings Resume:
With everything related to professional golf on hold, the Official World Golf Rankings have been on vacation as well.
The OWGR will resume when the PGA Tour gets back to action next week at the Charles Schwab Championship at Colonial Country Club. The world’s current top five players will be there — Rory McIlroy (No. 1), John Rahm (No. 2), Brooks Koepka (No. 3), Justin Thomas (No. 4) and Dustin Johnson (No. 5).
