Although the PGA Tour has yet to confirm it, it looks like there could be four more of those big-money “elevated events” on the 2023 PGA Tour schedule.
Per leaks/reports the Phoenix Open, The Heritage, the Wells Fargo and The Travelers Championship will received that designation next year meaning they’ll have $20 million purses and field’s with the Tour’s best players.
The previously announced eight elevated events are the Sentry Tournament of Champions ($15 million purse), Genesis Invitational ($20 million), Arnold Palmer Invitational ($20 million), WGC-Dell Match Play ($20 million) and the Memorial Tournament ($20 million), as well as three FedExCup playoff events: the FedEx St. Jude Championship ($20 million), BMW Championship ($20 million), Tour Championship/FedEx Cup ($75 million bonus pool).
Champions Tour Playoffs Begin:
The regular season is over for the Champions Tour but the chase for the Charles Schwab Cup heads up with the playoffs beginning Friday at the Dominion Energy Classic.
The Dominion Energy Classic is the first event in the three-tournament playoff series. The 68-player field will play three rounds at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course to determine which 54 players advance to the following week’s event in Boca Raton for the Timber Tech Championship (Nov. 4-6), and ultimately the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship (Nov. 10-13) at Phoenix Country Club.
Jon Rahm Pushes Back At Phil Mickelson:
Of course you’d expect nothing less from the Head Defector (aka Phil Mickelson) who went on the record to say that LIV Golf is on the rise while the PGA Tour is on the decline.
Jon Rahm doesn’t see it that way.
“Man, I love Phil,” said Rahm. “But I don’t know what he’s talking about. I really don’t know why he said that.
“There’s been some changes being made, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going down, right?” Rahm said, referencing major changes the Tour has announced that would boost purses and ensure that the Tour’s stars play against each other at least 17 times a season. “I truly don’t know why he said that. Don’t know. I really don’t know. I think there’s some great changes being made and great changes for the players on the Tour.
“I truly don’t know what drove him to say something like that.”
