Will Wilcox understands his standing on the PGA Tour.
He’s no household name, not someone you see at the top of leader boards.
But on Friday the 13th, 2016, some 14 years after Miguel Angel Jimenez did it, Wilcox aced the infamous 17th hole at the Players Championship. In all, there have been 6,296 attempts since Jimenez made his ace.
With a helping wind, Wilcox pulled a pitching wedge from his bag and took aim at the hole, 147 yards away.
“I was nervous, just get it up there somewhere,” Wilcox said, thinking back to the magical moment at 17, his eighth hole of the second round. “The wind was perfect for that club — it came out drawing and landed up there around the hole.”
Next thing he knew, it rolled INTO the hole.
“Pretty surreal,” he said. “I can’t believe that happened. My family is here. Maybe somebody knows who I am now.”
For sure.
