Fred Funk added his name to a very elite list on Friday afternoon at the Bermuda Championship.
The 64-year-old Funk finished birdie-birdie-birdie at the Port Royal Golf Club and became only the fourth player in PGA Tour history to make a 36-hole cut at age 64 or older. Funk joined Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Tom Watson on that short list.
Playing with son Taylor, Funk birdied the Seventh (his 16th hole of the day), the eighth (his 17th hole of the day) then chipped in for birdie at the ninth to shoot a one-over par 72. That and his opening 69 had him at one-under and well inside the 36-hole cut, which came at one-over par.
Funk was nearly tackled by his son after his chip dropped into the cup.
Funk competed the first two rounds in Bermuda alongside Taylor, who turned pro in 2017 after playing college golf at Texas.
It was Taylor’s second career Tour start. Fred was making his 650th appearance. “It’s something you dream about or think about,” Funk said after finishing a day made very difficult by 30 mile per hour wind gusts. “I don’t know if you can actually (know) whether it’s really going to happen, the probability of it happening, but it did and it’s really special
Funk was only seven shots off the lead of eight-under par. Ryan Armour (64-70) and Wyndham Clark (66-68) were tied at the top.
Kramer Hickok was a shot back at seven-under.
First round leader Peter Malnati got roughed up by the windy conditions. After his opening 63, he was 11 shots higher, shooting 74 and dropping into a tie for sixth at five-under par.
Defending champion Brendon Todd finished at four-over and missed the cut while pre-tournament favorite Will Zalatoris is seven shots back of the leaders at one-under par.
