Fred Couples’ back has been his Achilles heel throughout his entire golf career.
Even as a young man in his prime, it was always a concern, perhaps a reason why he only won one major — the 1992 Masters.
On Monday, Couples withdrew from the 2016 Masters, this is the first time he’ll miss the even since 1994.
His back went out on him and the condition was described as “acute” leaving some to wonder when he’ll tee it up again on the Champions Tour. His withdrawal from the tournament reduces the field to 89 players who will start on Thursday.
Couples is getting long in the tooth at age 56 and with his skills eroding, we are left to wonder how long he’ll continue to try and play with the young guys.
